Bungy jumping is taking the world by storm, particularly after having recently found additional venues within the highest mountain peaks in the world - the Himalaya mountain range. It’s a crazy sport that has some of the best views imaginable, if you don’t mind heights and being upside down. It has to be said that the Nepal bungy jump experience, with the longest free-fall to date, is nothing like you could imagine at 160 meters over the untamed waters of the Bhote Koshi. It is about a three hour drive from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, to begin your adrenalin pumping adventure.
At the moment there is only one bungy jumping agency operating in Nepal, known as ‘The Last Resort’. This agency hosts some of the most experienced jump masters in the field of bungy jumping. The jump they offer was designed by one of the leading consultants in New Zealand and abides by the strict international standards, thus guaranteeing the utmost safety from beginning to end. The bungy jump in Nepal takes place from a 166 meter steel suspension bridge that is Swiss designed and made specifically for bungy jumping with a safety factor of x4 and a loading factor of 4.5t or 41,500kg. Interestingly, before the bridge was constructed, surrounding villagers would have to walk for about 5 hours in order to cross the river gorge safely.
The Last Resort offers a full package for adrenalin junkies. On the first day of your bungy jumping experience you will be provided with both lunch and dinner which will take place around the jump. As the time nears the anticipation almost seems too much before being transported off to the bungy jump site. It must be said, nothing can prepare you for this most unforgettable jump you will make. You will then spend the night at the resort, however, your experience does not stop here. On the second day you will enjoy a wonderful breakfast before you are once again whisked away from ‘The Last Resort’ to a site close to where you had previously jumped, this time you will get up close and personal, viewing the scenery from a totally different perspective while white river rafting and completing the Bhote koshi which entails 80 of the most challenging rapids. Lunch will then be provided before you make your way to your outside accommodation.

evc5.jpg (37792 bytes)     I was told that the best season for Mt. Everest tour is March - May and September - October. However   in order to experience the Tibet Mountain Festival (15, July).  I took a flight to Lhasa Airport in July. Wang, the travel guide, met me at the Lhasa Airport. From Lhasa Airport to Mt. Everest:
It was a rain day, Wang told me that there are two routes to chose: a southern old road and a northern new motorway from Lhasa  Gyantse to Shigatse (~670 km) .  On the way, we enjoyed the beautiful scenes, fresh air of the World's Roof very much,  as well as many famous sightseeing spots (It will be described in other articles).
Finally we arrived the Longpu Temple.
Longpu Temple is located at the end of the famous Longpu Glacier of Mt. Everest. It was built in 1899, At 5,154 m (16,909 ft) altitude, this is the highest temple in the world.
Longpu Temple belongs to Red religion of Tibetan Buddhism. It has a major temple and 8 attached temples. Today it becomes the Base Camp of Mt. Everest climbers.
Longpu Temple provides quite a number of rooms for tourists to stay. It becomes the highest hotel in the world.
From here you can get the best view of Mt. Everest.

A little Snack Bar on Mt. Everest:

Beside the Longpu Temple, the local Tibetan opened a little Snack Bar. I found almost all the guests here went to that little Snack Bar first. We went in there too.
Soft drink, wine, noodle, cake . . . are provided here. Quite comfortable in compare with driving on the mountain roads. We were relaxed.

The View of Mt. Everest:

Sat in the Little Snack Bar, I looked at the direction of  Mt. Everest. Unfortunately the dark clouds occupied the sky, I could not see any profile of the mountain.

"You had to wait . . . " Wang smiled, "The Third Goddess" will show you her beauty". The cloud gradually disappeared . . .

"See, this is the "Flag Cloud", when it reached the top of Mt. Everest, the wind over  there is very strong - equal to 9 grade."
I saw some clouds around the mountain top, moving fast like the flags.
Great! Mt, Everest getting clear and clear.

From here to view Mt. Everest, it was a huge triangle shaped tower, with its large bottom melted into the Earth, its top penetrated into the Heaven. On its north range, 3 great glaciers (East, Middle and West Longpu Glaciers) extending like a huge tree from bottom to the top of mountain.

What a magnificent view! I gazed Mt. Everest, I could not move my sight.

People said that stood on the Roof of the World, you felt the smallness of yourself.
It's true. And when you stood in front of Mt. Everest, this feeling was extremely strong!

The time was 9 PM already, everybody was waiting for the magic moment - The sun set light will staining the whole peak of Mt. Everest into a red color.

I never imaging "The Third Goddess" can be so charming and powerful. Oh! My Goddess!

It;s getting dark and the wind became very strong. We returned to the little Snack Bar. All excited and trying to chat about the unique feelings which you never be able to experience anywhere else.

Several Germans started to drink beers. Two of my friends joined them. A Chinese group showed their treasure - a bottle of rice wine contains 70% alcohol - and invited us.

Drinking such strong alcohol on the altitude of >5,000 m was not a delight game. I felt  slight worrying for my friends.  The I saw a  hill of empty wine bottles accumulated along the wall. It seems many heroes had done the drink celebrations here. I asked the boss of the Bar if any guest was ill and had to be transported down to the medical camp. He  smiled mysteriously and answered: "No, only non-drinkers had to go to the doctors".

Tibetan Mountain Festival:

17 July 1999 (Tibetan Calendar 4th June) was the Tibetan Mountain Festival. Tibetans believe this was the date when the Buddha give the first religious lecture. Tibetans wear new clothes, come to Longpu Temple attending the religious ceremony. Then they were singing and dancing outside the Temple until late night.

Our morning transport from Kathmandu takes us all the way through to Dunche, which lies on the east bank high above the Trishuli River. Beginning the trek from here allows us to cover some of the best trekking country in Nepal, where relatively few foreign trekkers visit. The route to Syabrubeshi follows the road up to a ridge at 1800, then continues for a short distance to Tamang Village of Thulo Bharkhu..About 100 m from the village the road crosses a small stream with some water –driven mills. The hike gets delightful through occasional pine and Rhododendron forests. After a short climb, the trail reaches a ridge crest at 2300, where the trek originally enters the Langtang valley. There are views of Snow peaks in Tibet, west to Ganesh Himal and east t oNaya Kangri and Ganja la peaks. A short, steep downhill through the Bamboo forests leads to Syabru at 2100m. (3 hrs)

Day 04 - Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2470m)

After leaving our hotel we cross the Bhote Kosi River by a suspension bridge towards ‘old’ Syabrubesi, a cluster of houses and a school opposite the river. Another suspension bridge carries us over the south side of the Langtang Khola, this river we will be following upwards for the next couple of days. We climb slowly to Doman (1680m) and continue over a rocky ridge to Landslide Lodge and Hot Spring restaurant; named after a small hot spring on the opposite river bank at 1810 meter. The trail now climbs gently up to Bamboo Lodge where we will enjoy our lunch. Opposite the river we will see near vertical cliffs covered with cactuses. After Bamboo we cross the Langtang Khola on a new suspension bridge to the north bank. The forest becomes sparser and drier on this side of the river, consisting mainly of scrub oaks and nettles. We climb steeply on a good trail to Rimche (2510m). We have now finished most of today’s climbing and descend slowly to Lama Hotel where we will spend the night (6 hrs).

Day 05 - Lama Hotel to Langtang (3430m)

The day starts with a gentle climb, but it soon becomes steeper, climbing through a forest of hemlocks, oaks, maples and rhododendron. Beautiful views of Langtang Lirung (7246m) can be seen from the trail. After little more then an hour we pass two lodges in the forest at Gumanchok (2800m), from where we climb to a Nepal army post and a national park checkpoint at Ghora Tabela (2970m). The trail asvends gradually, as the valley becomes wider. We will pass a few teashops at Thangshyap at 3140 meter, where we will have our lunch. The route is now in open country, and passes many mani stones, water-driven prayer wheels and a few scattered Tamang villages before arriving in Langtang. This is a small village consisting of guesthouses and yak farms. The surrounding fields containing buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips and barley have typical stone fencing walls (5 hrs).

Day 06 - Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa (3870m)

Walking through the village of Langtang we will pass many stone mani walls, covered with Tibetan inscriptions to please the gods. It then climbs up gradually past the small villages of Mumdu and Sindum. The trail continues through yak pastures. After crossing the Langtang Khola to its south bank we climb up through a landscape scattered with large boulders to a moraine where we will have the first views of Kyanjin Gompa ahead of us, and the dramatic icefall flowing from Langtang Lirung and Langtang Kinshung (6781m) north of us. Our route weaves through the large boulders to a gompa and from here it’s a short descent to Kyanjin Gompa. It is easy to reach our destination before lunch, allowing time to acclimatize and explore the surroundings. One of the options is a hike to one of the good viewpoints. To the north of Kyanjin Gompa is the Kyanjin Ri (4773m), which is a two-hour climb. From here we have a great view over the mountain range in the west, including Langshisha Ri (6370m), Gang Chhenpo (6388m) and Dorje Lakpa (6966m). (3hrs, to the viewpoint and back is about another 3 hrs).

Day 07 - Kyangjing Gompa to    Lama Hotel (2470m)

Today we follow our route back to Lama Hotel, the trail goes with a few short exceptions most of its way downwards, descending around 1400 meter back to Lama Hotel (5 hrs).

Day 08 - Lama Hotel (3600m) to Thulo Syabru (2260m)

We take the same route until we reach the Landslide lodge where we take the upper trail to reach Thulo Syabru. The trail goes up for around 400 meter, and passes a bhatti at U Kyang on the ridge before arriving at the pleasant village of Thulo Syabru, with its many elaborate carved windows (6 hrs).

Day 09 - Thulo Syabru to Sing Gompa (3330m)

Today we start our trek passing the gompa, school and army post, and then switchback up the steep hill above the village to Dursagang (2660m). The trail continues less steeply from now, mostly in forest of hemlock and oak to the top of the ridge at Foprang Danda, where we will have lunch. The trail to Sing Gompa cuts across the ridge top, staying fairly level as it crosses the head of the valley. After passing the final ridge at 3260 meter we will arrive at Sing Gompa (4 hrs).

Day 10 - Sing Gompa to Laurebina Yak (3920m)

The trail of today climbs steeply up the ridge, which creates a transition zone between rich, moist forests on the northern slopes and dry scrub vegetation on the slope facing south. The area on the northern slope is a sanctuary for the red panda, an endangered species that the Nepali calls cat bear. The trail crosses behind the ridge and stays in the deep forest for a while before emerging onto a saddle at Chalang Pati. From here we enter the Goisakund protected area where the killing of animals, lighting of wood fires and grazing of goats is prohibited. As the trail ascends there are outstanding views across Langtang valley to Langtang Lirung. It is possible to continue to Goisakund on the same day, but for acclimatization reasons it is wiser to stay in Lauberina Yak. Morning views from this small settlement are excellent – we can see the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Hirung (3 hrs).

Day 11 – Lauberina Yak to Goisakund (4360m)

We start by climbing further along the ridge till we see the first lakes at around 4200 meter. The trail now leaves the ridge and heads high above the Trisuli valley. After the trail crosses a spur, the second lake in the chain (Bhairav Kund) comes into view. The trail climbs gently but continuously to the third and largest lake, Goisakund. Goisakund Lake has a black rock in the middle, said to be the head of Shiva. According to the legend, Shiva created the lake when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after consuming poison. Hundreds of pilgrims come here to worship and bathe during the full-moon festival each August. It takes about 45 minutes to walk around the lake (3 hrs).

Day 12 - Gosainkunda to Gopte (3440m)

The first part of the trail climbs further through rugged country passing three more small lakes towards Laurebina La pass (4610m). There is a good view from this pass in both directions. After the pass, the trail descends alongside a stream through alpine country to the national park post at Bhera Goth. We continue descending over a rocky trail along the middle of the valley to Phedi (3740m) for lunch. From Phedi the route drops to a stream and then climbs through scrub bamboo to a crest at 3750 meter. From here we climb in and out ravines across the head of the valley to Gopte (7 hrs).

Day 13 - Gopte to Tharepati (3640m)

The trail continues up ravines and across the boulders of old moraines below the wreckage of
a Thai Airlines plane that crashed here in bad weather in 1992. Make a final ascent to Tharepati on the ridge at 3490m from where we can see the Helambu region. We will arrive around noon and rest of the day we can just relax (3 hrs).

Day 14 - Tharepati to Gul Bhanjyang (2492m)

In the morning we walk through the alpine country side with meadows and scrubs typical for high elevation. We will enter the forest again and follow the ridges before descending to Magen Goth.
Two lodges are remaining from a former army camp. The trail gently climbs to a small pass at Mere Danda at 3510 meter before descending through rhododendron forest inhabited by only a few shepherds’ huts. The trail continues further down to Kutumsang from where we continue to the nearby Gul Bhanjyang , which is a delightfullk classic hill village (6 hrs).

Day 15 - Gul Bhanjyang to Chisopani (2194m)

We start by descending down a forested ridge to the long, strung-out village of Thodang Betini (2260m). From here we climb up around 200 meters to the top of the Jhogin Danda ridge and descend over a stone staircase to the teashops at Chipling. Continuing our way down past Brahman and Chhetri villages and through meadows and fields we finally reach Chisopani, which resembles an unfinished tourist resort (5 hrs).

Day 16 - Chisopani to Kathmandu

We start the day by climbing up the last pass of the trek at Borlang Bhanjyang, which lies at 2240 meter. From here we descend steeply through deeply eroded chasms towards the Tamang settlement of Mulkharka at 1800 meter. From here on it is a short bit to Sundarjial as we walk past the local water supply system and follow the water pipe to this village. From Sundarijal we can take local transportation, or have our private transport waiting for us to bring us back to Kathmandu (4 hrs). Overnight stay at hotel.

Details:
A trek to Langtang valley starts with an overland journey to Syabrubesi, a small string of shops and hotels. Langtang is a narrow valley that lies just south of the Tibetan border. It is sandwiched between the Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower range of peaks to the south. This area was designated Nepal’s first Himalayan national park in 1971. This high and isolated region is inhabited by the Tamangs, whose religious practices, language and dress are more similar to those of Tibet then to the traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. According to a legend a lama following a runaway yak discovered the valley. Hence the name – lang its Tibetan for yak, and teng means to follow. Though the area is relatively close to Kathmandu, the region sees far fewer trekkers than Everest and Annapurna. This trek is easily combined with the Gosainkund Trek.

Details:
Helambu Valley  trek is a relatively low altitude one and it is close to Kathmandu, it is convenient yet surprisingly free of trekkers. The trek passes through some beautiful forests and very interesting villages on route. Along the way, we visit the homes of Brahmins, Tamangs and Sherpa people of Nepal. In the Helambu region, the Sherpas are quite distinct from the Sherpas of the Everest region in both language and customs. The ranges of mountains that rise above us match the diversity of the people we meet. Day 03-  Flight to Lukla / Start Trek to Phakding(2650 m)

We pick you up in the morning with our Local Leader/guide to the Domestic airport for the incomparable first scenic flight. We fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2827m). The flight itself is exciting. We fly parallel to the Himalayan giants bordering Nepal and Tibetan side of  China. Flight time is about 40 minutes and we land at an airstrip built by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpas in the mid-1960s. After landing we meet our porters who  carry our equipment during our trek. We also have time to explore the village before hitting the trail. The trek starts with a descend towards the Dudh Kosi River, passing through the many lucky prayers stones and prayer flags where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar and to the great areas of the Adventure destinations. (Dudh means 'milk' – the waters of the River are a strong milky white from glacial melt.) The walk is easy and after passing through the small village of Chheplung (2650),Ghat (2550m), we soon reach our lodge at Phakding. Our guides and porters  be happy to accompany you for the side walks and visiting local people around or rest reading books and exchanging new card games. (3 hrs)

Day 04-  Phakding to  - Namche Bazaar (3450m)

We start the day from Phakding and cross the River to walk through tracts of blue pine and rhododendron forest that is very spectacular in the spring, when the flowers are in bloom. We cross the Dudh Kosi River  at the end of Phakdingma  staying on the east and west bank of the River, enjoy great views of the snow-capped peaks of Kusum Kanguru (6369m) and Thamserku (6623m). From here it is only a short walk to Monjo (2835m), where we arrive in time for lunch. Then the walking gets a little tougher and includes a steep ascend to Namche Bazaar. It is a short walk to the entrance of the national park, where our permits are checked before we descend quite steeply to again cross the Dudh Kosi to Jorsale (2805m). The trek continues upstream on generally flat terrain, crossing back to the right bank, to the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi Rivers. After crossing a large and stable suspension bridge high above the River we climb steeply to the village of Namche Bazaar. A slow and steady pace is recommended on this section of the climb and we are encouraged to make the most of the fantastic photographic opportunities as the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Taweche come into view for the first time. You may notice you are travelling a little more slowly as the effects of altitude start to become apparent. Take your time on this path which is used by the local peoples as a 'foot highway' on this important trading route. At Namche we stay in a lodge in the heart of the village. (6:30 hrs)

Day 05-   Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

We stay at Namche for a second night to allow us proper acclimatization to the high altitude and to enable full exploration of the town and its surrounds. Namche is a prosperous village, situated in a large, protected hollow. It gained its importance during the period when Tibetan salt was traded for the lowland grains of Nepal. Today quite an amount of trade continues at Namche and Tibetans are sometimes seen in the village trading rugs and Chinese-made goods, clothing, salt and dried meat. It is recommended that you take the opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset views from the national park headquarters above the village. The panorama can be stunning at both times of the day with a superb view of the Khumbu peaks, including great sightings of Everest. After breakfast Your guides  be on hand to offer advice and to escort you on the walks. The option is the steep climb out of the village bowl to the flatter areas around and above Shyangboche Airstrip, Everest View Hotel where beautiful views of Everest, Amadablam, Lhotse, Tawoche, Peak 38, Thamsherku abound. There are various options, including a walk with a series of great peaks rearing to well over 6,000 meters just to the west. Alternatively you can visit the national park headquarters to see the interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle and culture.
Day 06-   Namche to Tengboche(3860m)

Our route of today to Tengboche weaves in and out of side valleys, making small ups and downs, to the teashops of Kenjoma, and joins the trail from Khumjung just before a collection of Mani stones. The views of Everest and Ama Dablam are excellent from this part of the trek. We pass the small settlement of Sanasa from where the trail drops towards Phunki Thanga (3250m). From here the trail climbs steeply through forests and around Mani stones as it follows the side of a hill to the saddle on which the monestary of Tengboche sits at 3870m. The view from here is rightly deemed to be one of the worlds most magnificent. Kwangde (6187m), Tawachee (6542m), Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse (8501m), Ama Dablan, Kantega and Thamserku provide an inspiring panorama of Himalayan giants. We spend the night in Tengboche village (5 hrs).

Day 07-   Tengboche to Dingboche(4345m)

From Tengboche we start our day by descending through forests of birches, conifers and rhododendrons to the village of Dibuche. From here the level trail passes many Mani walls in a deep rhododendron forest. After crossing the Imja Khola River the route climbs past some magnificently carved Mani stones to Pangboche (3901m). This is the highest year-round settlement in the valley, and the Pangboche gompa is the oldest in Khumbu  once contained relics that were said to be the skull and hand of a yeti. Beyond Pangboche the route enters alpine meadows above the tree line, mostly consisting of scrub juniper and tundra. We  cross Imjatse  River and arrive in Dingboche, which is a labyrinth of walls and pastures.Dingboche is the valley made by Imjatse River that flows down from the Island peak. This is the best valley to be to feel just in the lap of the beautiful Mountain Amadablam,Kantega and other peaks. (5 hrs).

Day 08-   Acclimatisation Day in Dingboche(4345m)

The most important thing  to acclimatise in high altitudes is a slow ascend. Therefore it is imperative that we spend an additional night at Dingboche to aid the acclimatisation process. A good way to spend the day is to hike to the Nzagazong Parbat to the hight of 5000m from where the views are just marvellous. From here we have majestic  views of Island Peak (6189m), therehearsal trekking peak, south face of Lothse and the giant of Ama Dablam,Mt. Makalu(8030m). After enjoying the views here we return back to Dingboche (4 hrs)

Day 09-   Dingboche to Lobuche(4930m)

It is a tough walk today up the valley to Lobuche, so do take your time and ensure you are well hydrated. From Dingboche we ascend the small ridge behind the village above Pheriche Valley. From the chorten at the top, the peaks of Taweche and Cholatse (6440m) dramatically line the valley to the west. To the north, Lobuje Peak (6119m) and the snowfields of the Cho La can be seen. At Dughla (4620m) we take a light lunch at the foot of the huge terminal moraines of Khumbu Glacier, which has flowed off Everest, and in the afternoon we climb steadily to reach a ridge with a line of memorial cairns, built in memory of Sherpas and other climbers who have died on various Everest expeditions over the last 50 years. From here the view is spectacular; Pumori (7145m), Lingtren (6697m), Khumbutse (6623m), and, across the border in Tibet, Changtse (7550m) are seen at the head of the valley, whilst Everest is hidden behind the towering walls of Nuptse and Lhotse. We then follow the valley stream to our lodge at Lobuje, arriving early afternoon. (5 hrs)

Day 10-  Lobuche to Gorak Shep(5200m)

The first section of today’s trail follows the western side of the broad Khumbu valley and ascends gently through meadows besides the glacial moraine. The ascend becomes steeper and rougher as it crosses several side moraines. After rounding a bend in the trail, the conical peak of Pumori comes into view. On the lower slopes of this mountain a ridge extending to the south terminates in a small peak, known as Kala Pattar (5545m), meaning 'black rock'. The trail then makes a short descend onto the sandy, flat expanse of Gorak Shep. From here we  continue to the current Everest base camp, which is about a 4 hours return walk from Gorak Shep. We  return to this small settlement after our visit to the base camp (6 hrs).

Day 11-   Gorakhshep to Pheriche(4240m)

To go to Pheriche we retrace our steps back to Dughla, and then go straight down  hill from the bridge to reach an lower trail, staying high above the valley floor. The views from here are great valley, meadow. You can easily recognise Lobuche Peak and the Cholatse is visible in the distance  to the left of Ngazong Parbat. It is amazing how quickly we retrace the trail that was a challenge to ascend en route to Everest Base Camp. We should be well acclimatised and we head quickly back downhill to Dughla and then taking a different route following the wide alpine valley to Pheriche for a long tea break. There is a trekkers’ aid post here, supported by the Himalayan Rescue Association which although not manned year round is well worth a visit if open. (7 hrs)

Day 12-  Pheriche to Tengboche(3860m)

From Pheriche we ascend a short steep trail to the top of a small ridge for great views of Imja Valley, Ama Dablam and Kantega, before taking lunch at Orsho. In the afternoon we again descend to Shomare and later pass through Lower Pangboche to reach the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola River and re-trace our steps to Debuche and on to Tengboche.(6hrs)

Day 13-   Tengboche to Namche Bazaar

From Tengboche we descend steeply to the suspension bridge at Phunkitenga and after a  break and  a cup of tea we cross the Dudh Kosi and ascend to Tashinga. From here the trail contours high above the valley through Shanasa before returning to Namche Bazaar, where we stay and enjoy a final opportunity to visit the shops in the bazaar. ( 5 hours)
Day 14-   Namche to Phakdingma

Today we slowly head back to Phakdingma through the busy Namche. We descend down to Jorsale bridge through the jungle and rough trail down and then walk to the Monjo through River bank, cross long suspension bridge and then gradual up and down to Phakdingma. This is a short and sweet walk to have rest on our way back before getting to the Lukla next day.(3hrs)

Day 15-   Phakdingma to Lukla

There is no rush today as we retrace our steps back to Lukla. We head forward from Phakding  after the breakfast and, although the final ascend up to Lukla is a surprise for most trekkers, reach the airport in the early afternoon. Lukla is famous for its end of trek celebrations, although we should not overdo it, as the plane ride back to Kathmandu is not best enjoyed with a hangover! (3 hours)

Day 16-   Flight to Kathmandu

We rise early in the morning to be ready for the arrival of our aircraft for the flight back to Kathmandu. We are met at the airport and transferred to our hotel, located  in  Kathmandu(have choice the Hotel). You do not miss to clean yourself , laundry and rest to feel low altitude.
